According to ESPN, the New York Yankees and NFL have Agreed to a $98.09 billion contract which……
I never went to a Minnesota Timberwolves game in Target Center, but I have watched a lot of them here in New York at Barclays Center. I can also tell you that, in contrast to some of my co-fans who are better off financially, I have been living in the Brooklyn Arena’s higher floors, where the food is still not great but the tickets are. However, there’s a wonderful quality up there. Something that the folks in the lower bowl have to squint in order to see is something I see frequently.
Legends that have influenced the squad I’m watching are all over the rafters. One hanging cloth decoration is the culmination of years of service. Not me, but the lower bowl has a better view of the action. I get to witness this team in all its glory. Who put them there is up to me to see. I get to recognize more than one game or lineup iteration. I witness everything.
That is why the distinction is so valuable and uncommon. Because of this, the Los Angeles Lakers have the second-most retired jerseys, while the Boston Celtics have the most with their almost century-long history. Because they witnessed the Vancouver outcasts arrive on their doorstep in 2001 and raised them in a manner their Canadian equivalent could not, the Memphis Grizzlies’ announcement of the particular privilege they will be granting Marc Gasol is significant for Memphis.
It matters to retire a jersey. Not to the numbers, not to the history, because those figures and anecdotes still exist, but to the players and all the other players involved.
A controversial yet legendary figure in the sport declared his retirement in 2016. It was anticipated that Kevin Garnett’s jersey will be retired by the team he played for nearly 13 years. However, years and years went by. And now here we are. At Target Center’s southern end, the jersey is still not up there. A horrible connection between the franchise owner and a previous star lies at the heart of the drama.
Usually, a player who is among the greatest of all time at his position would not say things like these. They ought to be overflowing with expressions of gratitude and speeches highlighting the true accomplishments of their careers. Rather than wounds that are still open and festering, they need to be full of playful barbs and the ashes of long-forgotten drama.
In instances such as this, the Wolves have been ridiculed and referred to be inferior. But that was not what a former Wolf had to say. Certainly, those weren’t remarks meant for a team that the sports community views as being below average. They were actually aimed at a squad that had 22 retired jerseys, a 57% all-time winning percentage, six championships, and was regarded as the best in the world of athletic endeavors.
Alex Rodriguez’s reaction to the Yankees reaffirming their decision to not retire A-Rod’s number thirteen jersey when they gave it to Joey Gallo in 2021 was expressed in those hurt, hesitant remarks.
