the following Monday The leader board: Charlie Woods’s challenge, Anthony Kim’s comeback, and what happens when movement and speech goes wrong..
For a brief period between 2008 and 2012, if you were not involved in the golf world, you may have missed the rise to fame of Anthony Kim. He was a happy, smiling genius who instilled party-boy spirit in a sport that was dominated by Tiger Woods fandom. Kim arrived just as Woods’s reputation was beginning to fade as a result of his personal mishaps and injuries.
The post-Tiger era of Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler, and Brooks Koepka, who infused freshness and fire into the traditionally drab game, was heralded by Anthony Kim. With three PGA Tour victories under his belt and the record for most birdies in a round at the Masters standing at eleven, Kim was clearly a skilled player. However, the wounds kept coming, and after he tore his Achilles, the Trojan
According to reports, Kim became golf’s Bigfoot, only making fleeting appearances every few years, because his $10 million contract of insurance would expire if he resumed playing professional golf. He was rumored to return at some point, and it looks like that time is here with you.
Of course, LIV Golf is the only place a former star could go to obtain the equivalent of a $10 million policy, and it’s there that Kim is reportedly scheduled to play next, beginning this weekend in Saudi Arabia. For Kim, it’s a no-lose proposition; there’s no cut in LIV Golf, no risk of not earning a paycheck; if he plays well enough, he could earn his way onto an existing LIV team… and position himself for a return to the PGA Tour whenever the sport’s two warring goliaths reconcile.
As thrilled as golfers are with Kim’s comeback, consider this: The guy hasn’t played competitive golf in almost ten years. Even Tiger Woods, who was only taking months sabbatical at a time, struggled to return to competitive form after his numerous absences. Kim may not be the same person he once was; a reunited band may not sound exactly like the original, and a reunited TV series or film franchise may not have the same impact as it once did. In fact, it’s likely that Kim will just be a shell of his former self. However, that’s okay since, notwithstanding how much joy he gave us at the beginning of the decade, he is free to do as he pleases.
Let’s move on to a future star of the PGA Tour, Jake Knapp, who won the Mexico Open on Sunday despite only hitting two fairways in his ninth career appearance. In his last round, Knapp staggered early but managed to hold off a surging Sami Valimaki. Granted, this weekend’s top players on the PGA Tour were elsewhere, but so what? This year, Knapp is still invited to both The Players and the Masters.
Furthermore, Knapp boasts one of the greatest Alabama Waterfalls that can be found on tour. If this signals the mullet’s comeback, we can all celebrate Knapp Time took place.
