Luis Castillo have agreed signing a 7-Years contract extension worth $500,000 million with Boston Red Sox due to…
For their Opening Day matchup mitigating the Boston Red Sox on March 28, the Seattle Mariners selected Luis Castillo as their respective positions starter.
Having pitched a gem in the previous year’s opening against the Cleveland Guardians, the 31-year-old Dominican will take the mound for Seattle for the second straight year. As part of a 3-0 shutout victory, Castillo gave up just one hit in six scoreless innings and made franchise history by being the first pitcher to pitch at least six scoreless innings on Opening Day while giving up one hit or less.
Last year, Castillo only made one start versus Boston and suffered a lot at Fenway Park. Castillo pitched five innings, giving up seven runs—five earned—on six hits, two walks, and six strikeouts. The Red Sox defeated the Mariners 9–4, and in the process, they matched a season-high in home runs allowed by Castillo by hitting three home runs off him.
Even before spring training started, Castillo was the clear favorite to start on Opening Day. Though the Mariners have not yet finalized their starting lineup, Bryce Miller and Bryan Woo were supposed to be the team’s fourth and fifth starters, respectively. The only thing left to decide is who will get the ball in Game 2: George Kirby or Logan Gilbert.
During Saturday’s Sox prospects victory over Atlanta’s young players at JetBlue Park, Yorke displayed his hitting prowess by hitting an RBI single to right and flexing his muscles by tagging a double off the center-field fence.
But the positive energy didn’t last long. Yorke’s performance in the breakout game was by far his best of the spring, and on Monday morning, he was one of the few players sent to minor league camp. In and of itself, the move was not that surprising. Yorke has occasionally given the impression that he could push his way into the major leagues in 2024, but a standout spring training would have been necessary to convince the team to hold onto him for the opening game of the this time of year.
