There are now two incredibly strong conferences in college football, thanks to a wave of restructuring that eliminated a power conference in the West. Having officially joined the SEC in 2024, the Texas Longhorns were a part of the initial wave of movement that began it all. Expect some ridiculous regular season matchups as they are now in the same conference as powerful programs like Georgia, Alabama, and LSU. Texas had a full schedule in 2024 previously, but according to 247Sports, the relocation has added three games that are crucial to college football.
The Longhorns were anticipated to play two important games even though the switch to the SEC added one of these games. The Red River Showdown is ranked No. 10 among the season’s most significant games by Brad Crawford of 247Sports. College football fans always look forward to this game, even if Oklahoma isn’t predicted to make the playoffs. Furthermore, by leaving a stain on their record, as they did in 2023, the Sooners very well could ruin Texas’ season.
Their Week 2 matchup at Michigan was ranked as the fourth-most significant game by Crawford. Texas is hoping to make a statement by defeating the champions as they travel to Ann Arbor to compete in one of the harshest settings in sports history. Whether Texas wins the SEC or not, this would be a significant victory for their record, and a loss this early for either team may really harm their prospects of making the playoffs.
The SEC matchup between Texas and the Bulldogs was ranked as the second most significant game. One week after their game against Oklahoma, the Longhorns will visit the ranked Georgia Bulldogs. These two weeks could be the most important of their season. The victor, if they don’t already hold the top spot, would undoubtedly take it if both teams emerge unscathed.
While winning all three of these games would be ideal for Texas, a 2-1 victory will still keep them in the hunt. If they dropped two, or even worse, all three, the early-season panic button would be hit. They would then have to contend with the consequences and hope to be considered for an at-large bid, which is still quite likely.
